Photography Preservation

We all have those timeless family photos that beckon our hearts and minds to reflect back on a time in our family long since past. Often times those photos have been handed down through generations and get faded or scratched and even torn. I do not restore the original, but I can create a digitally restored image from the original, sometimes better than the original. Read on below to find out how I can help.

The Original

The image on the left is a scan of a 8x10 portrait of my Great Grandmother, Ada Johnson. The portrait was presumably taken some time in the mid thirties and has obviously seen better days. You can see in the scan that there are creases, stains, yellowing and even a tear along the left side that was carefully laid in place for the scan.

I cannot repair the original print obviously, but with powerful software I can restore the image and create an improved digital copy.

I start with an extremely high resolution scan of the print. Next,  I import the scan into software and meticulously remove the blemishes, the tears and creases and address the fading of the image that has taken its toll on the print over the years.

The Restored Image

The image on the right is the result. As you can see, the creases and tears have been removed. The faded image has minor lighting adjustments to improve the contrast.

You can also see that the detail in her eyes and face have been digitally restored using AI (Artificial Intelligence). The result is a far more crisp image that can support printing in a wide array of sizes including the original 8x10 and larger.

With a restored image file, my family can create new restored prints of the image while also having a digital backup in the event that our copies somehow get damaged.

If you have family photographs you would like to attempt to restore, reach out and we can discuss how to get started.
